The Best Hack EVER!

I’m a big fan of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. Unlike the campy series of the early 90s that I grew up with, this one is much truer to Eastman and Laird’s original comic series. I highly recommend it. However, this update is not about four mutant turtles. This update is about the Best Hack EVER!

You see, while watching TMNT this morning, I was confounded by these bumpers during the commercial break. They featured this Chinese kid rambling incoherently while plugging Fox cartoons; he even began to sing, badly, at one point. I pointed out this oddity to my wife, who promptly educated me on the harsh realities of the modern Fox Network. For the record, I gave up on the Fox network when Married With Children went off the air. It would seem that the fore mentioned Chinese kid is none other than William Hung, of American Idol fame. For those of you as out of touch as me: American Idol is a modern version of the Gong Show, dumbed down and simplified for the Fox viewing audience. It didn’t take me long to realize the true genius here.

The purpose of American Idol is to have anyone with an ounce of singing talent, and no shame what-so-ever, compete on television for a shallow short-lived singing career. Occasionally, they will air some of the bad auditions for the audiences’ amusement. Enter — William Hung. William Hung, in a move of comedic genius, created an audition so ridiculously hysterical you can’t not love it. He became an overnight success as “the goofy Chinese kid on American Idol”. This led to public appearances, a fairly large fan base, and, best of all, an actual record contract.

William Hung has used American Idol as a spring-board to fame on his own terms. He didn’t sing well, he certainly didn’t win, but he has his name on a CD, and he’s on television all the time. He has not only hacked Fox, but most of the American public. If that’s not the Best Hack EVER, I don’t know what is. William Hung, you are truly a Hero!
